Enjoy 5 days and 4 nights at Heartwood Mountain Sanctuary among the breathtaking vistas and green rolling hills of far Northern California. Settle into the serenity of the natural world as we explore what it means to inhabit our lives with a friendliness, compassion, joy and equanimity.

Drawing on the teachings of the Buddha, we’ll focus on cultivating the capacity to skillfully navigate our everyday lives with loving awareness born from the steady receptive mind, and the courageous wise heart.

Our practices will include formal lovingkindness (metta)  and mindfulness meditation, the gentle movement practice of qigong, small group practice discussions, time for personal relaxation, daily dharma talks, all within the peace of extensive periods of silence.

Heartwood Mountain Sanctuary is located 200 miles north of San Francisco, about an hour’s drive outside of the town of Garberville. The secluded center is tucked into the hills of Humboldt County where peace and solitude abound. With a gorgeous meditation temple, indoor-outdoor dining lodge, hot tub and sauna, it’s a perfect place to settle in, unwind and replenish.

The newly renovated modern eco-lodging offers a shared indoor camping space (Sunrise), private rooms in common buildings (Manzanita and Madrone) and individual Bungalows that include a ground level living space and an upper level sleeping loft. With the exception of just two rooms in Madrone, all lodging utilizes shared bathroom facilities. Choose your lodging preference with registration.

Please note that the terrain at Heartwood is hilly with gravel paths with some gentle stairs. The Bungalows and Manzanita require downhill and uphill walking, and Madrone is relatively flat. All of the residential buildings require about a 10 minute walk to the dining lodge and the meditation temple. For some, walking poles may be helpful.

The Heartwood Lodge Kitchen prepares the freshest farm-to-table fare, grown right on site. The culinary staff creates nourishing menus with seasonal farm fresh produce, merging the best of old world haute cuisine and new world innovation. Our first meal together will be Wednesday dinner, and our last meal will be Sunday breakfast. Snacks, tea and coffee are available anytime. The chef is happy to reasonably accommodate those with food restrictions.

Everyone is welcome! This retreat is suitable for both beginning and seasoned practitioners.

Please note: The last 20 miles of the drive is on a curvy and sometimes narrow mountain road. The road is in good shape and takes about an hour to drive from Garberville to the retreat center.
