This class is for those with no prior experience and will introduce students to the basic tools, language, and techniques of bookmaking as a creative and expressive art form.

George Lea leads this class for those who are inspired to get creative with a wide range of materials and techniques.  From the first day of class, participants will begin to learn the spoken and visual language used by Book Artists while learning to use basic hand tools to create the individual elements of which a book is comprised. In the days that follow we will dig deeper into the working processes of both Eastern and Western artisans and how these traditional techniques are being combined with innovative new methods and materials by contemporary Book Artists.

The instructor believes that Handcrafted books are unique in their individuality, just like the people who create them! He works with the uniqueness of individual intent and inspiration to open doorways to creative potential. This class will place an emphasis on alternative methods of book construction, using both adhesive and non-adhesive bindings, as well as recycled and up-cycled materials.

Participants will be provided with several hand-outs that provide additional instruction, links to on-line suppliers, and suggestions for setting up a simple Book Art studio upon returning home.

While no prior experience is required, the instructor recommends that participants have both discipline and patience, as the process of bookmaking can be time-consuming and does require constant attention to fine detail.

Class size is limited to 8 students. Check-in is by 5:00 pm Sunday, July 5th at our Welcome Center, check out is on Sunday, July 12th by 1:00 pm. Tuition is $750.00 and includes all course materials.

note: all students must register by Saturday, June 20th.

Various Housing options and meals are also available.
