Heartwood​ ​Mountain​ ​Sanctuary,​ ​HUB​ ​for​ ​Food,​ ​Arts,​ ​Culture,​ ​and​ ​Ecology,​ ​is​ ​a​ ​rural​ ​Healing Arts​ ​Center​ ​located​ ​in​ ​the​ ​mountains​ ​above​ ​Garberville​ ​in​ ​Northern​ ​California.​ ​Heartwood​ ​is dedicated​ ​to​ ​empowering​ ​individuals​ ​in​ ​fulfilling​ ​their​ ​dreams​ ​of​ ​a​ ​career​ ​and​ ​life​ ​with​ ​heart. Heartwood​ ​Mountain​ ​Sanctuary​ ​provides​ ​experiences​ ​for​ ​personal​ ​growth​ ​through​ ​education, recreation,​ ​wellness​ ​and​ ​retreat.

Position​ ​Overview

The​ ​Farm​ ​Manager​ ​reports​ ​to​ ​the​ ​General​ ​Manager​ ​(GM)​ ​and​ ​is​ ​responsible​ ​for​ ​day-to-day operations​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Heartwood​ ​Farm,​ ​including​ ​oversight​ ​of​ ​all​ ​gardens,​ ​orchards​ ​and​ ​animal areas​ ​on​ ​our​ ​200​ ​acre​ ​estate.​ ​Primary​ ​objectives​ ​are​ ​to​ ​increase​ ​food​ ​security​ ​and​ ​ecological integrity,​ ​and​ ​provide​ ​a​ ​year-round​ ​supply​ ​of​ ​food,​ ​medicine​ ​and​ ​other​ ​crops​ ​to​ ​the​ ​Heartwood Lodge​ ​Kitchen​ ​and​ ​larger​ ​community.​ ​The​ ​Farm​ ​Manager​ ​will​ ​work​ ​collaboratively​ ​with Management​ ​Team​ ​(TLC)​ ​and​ ​Owners/Advisory​ ​Council​ ​to​ ​develop​ ​and​ ​implement​ ​land management​ ​practices​ ​that​ ​meet​ ​the​ ​highest​ ​standards​ ​of​ ​environmental​ ​stewardship.

Responsibilities

●  Oversees​ ​year-round​ ​farm​ ​operations,​ ​including​ ​team​ ​management,​ ​scheduling, planting​ ​cycles,​ ​crop​ ​rotation,​ ​soil​ ​fertility,​ ​nursery​ ​and​ ​greenhouse​ ​management, harvest,​ ​irrigation,​ ​pest​ ​management​ ​and​ ​equipment​ ​maintenance​ ​schedules

●  Maintains​ ​healthy​ ​farm​ ​production​ ​output,​ ​building​ ​food​ ​security​ ​for​ ​Heartwood residents,​ ​guests,​ ​visitors,​ ​and​ ​larger​ ​community

●  Communicates​ ​with​ ​the​ ​Heartwood​ ​Kitchen​ ​about​ ​food​ ​needs​ ​and​ ​coordinates plantings​ ​to​ ​support​ ​culinary​ ​efforts

●  Utilizes​ ​existing​ ​resources​ ​(Exos​ ​plan,​ ​team​ ​of​ ​owners/advisors)​ ​to​ ​inform​ ​long​ ​term planning,​ ​and​ ​makes​ ​recommendations​ ​for​ ​improvements

●  Recruits,​ ​trains,​ ​and​ ​oversees​ ​farm​ ​crew,​ ​including​ ​staff,​ ​​apprentices,​ ​volunteers​ ​and seasonal​ ​workers

●  Maintains​ ​budgets​ ​and​ ​regular​ ​record​ ​keeping​ ​for​ ​all​ ​farm​ ​operations

●  Maintains​ ​regular​ ​email​ ​and​ ​phone​ ​correspondence

●  Maintains​ ​a​ ​clean,​ ​safe,​ ​and​ ​organized​ ​work​ ​environment

●  Uses​ ​company​ ​resources​ ​(time/labor,​ ​tools,​ ​supplies)​ ​in​ ​efficient,​ ​cost-effective

manner

●  Attends​ ​public​ ​events​ ​to​ ​promote​ ​Heartwood​ ​Farm​ ​programs​ ​and​ ​offerings

●  Develops​ ​and​ ​maintains​ ​positive​ ​relationships​ ​with​ ​area​ ​farms​ ​and​ ​related

organizations

●  Maintains​ ​highest​ ​levels​ ​of​ ​professionalism​ ​and​ ​courtesy​ ​when​ ​interacting​ ​with​ ​other

team​ ​members,​ ​guests,​ ​and​ ​visitors

●  Supports​ ​other​ ​departments​ ​as​ ​needed​ ​(by​ ​approval​ ​of​ ​Supervisor)

Qualifications

●  3+​ ​years​ ​of​ ​experience​ ​in​ ​sustainable​ ​gardening​ ​or​ ​farming,​ ​full​ ​season,​ ​preferably​ ​at Manager​ ​level

●  2+​ ​years​ ​personnel​ ​or​ ​business​ ​management​ ​experience

●  Understanding​ ​of​ ​sustainable​ ​agricultural​ ​principles​ ​such​ ​as:​ ​Permaculture,​ ​ecology,

mycology,​ ​whole​ ​farm​ ​planning,​ ​integrated​ ​pest​ ​management,​ ​perennial​ ​crops​ ​and

orchards,​ ​cover​ ​cropping,​ ​soil​ ​and​ ​plant​ ​sciences,​ ​animal​ ​husbandry

●  Experience​ ​operating​ ​and​ ​maintaining​ ​farm​ ​vehicles,​ ​equipment​ ​and​ ​tools

●  Flexibility;​ ​able​ ​to​ ​balance​ ​operations​ ​as​ ​work​ ​flow​ ​increases/decrease​ ​with​ ​seasonal

production​ ​cycles

●  Ability​ ​to​ ​manage​ ​resources​ ​efficiently,​ ​implement​ ​waste​ ​reduction​ ​systems​ ​and

engage​ ​in​ ​creative​ ​problem​ ​solving

●  Previous​ ​teaching​ ​experience​ ​around​ ​topics​ ​of​ ​sustainable​ ​farming/gardening

●  Strong​ ​knowledge​ ​of​ ​regional​ ​plant​ ​material

●  Excellent​ ​communication​ ​and​ ​organizational​ ​skills

●  Ability​ ​to​ ​work​ ​well​ ​independently​ ​and​ ​as​ ​part​ ​of​ ​a​ ​team

●  Willingness​ ​to​ ​en​ gage​ ​in,​ ​and​ ​take​ ​responsibility​ ​for,​ ​collaborative​ ​decision​ ​making

processes

●  Ability​ ​to​ ​work​ ​safely​ ​and​ ​effectively​ ​in​ ​inclement​ ​weather

●  Physically​ ​strong​ ​and​ ​capable​ ​of​ ​lifting​ ​50​ ​lbs

●  Completion​ ​of​ ​Permaculture​ ​Design​ ​Certification​ ​(PDC)​ ​preferred
